CHROMA:
A SOLO SHOW BY ERROL THUENISSEN
NOV 7TH - 24TH 2024
CHROMA:
This exhibition is set to showcase a collection of vivid, symbolic works inspired by Theunissen’s African roots and daily experiences, offering audiences an insight into his world through the exploration of colour and narrative.

‘Chroma’ will explore universal themes such as family, community, and memory, and it is Theunissen’s signature use of symbols within his paintings that encourages viewers to draw out personal interpretations and connections to his stories. The result is a visual narrative filled with both nostalgia and present-day reflections, woven through personal memories of Africa and his life in the UK.

Whether it’s family scenes, animals, or memories of home, Theunissen’s work captures emotions and stories through spontaneous, snapshot-like compositions. Deeply influenced by his Zimbabwean heritage, his paintings invite the viewer into intimate moments from his everyday life, elevating the ordinary through bright colours and symbolism.

“I am fascinated by the simple and honest relationships humans have with animals,” says Theunissen. “These relationships often contain more truth and clarity than our complex human interactions. The colours I use are a reflection of my childhood in Zimbabwe, where the vibrancy of the land, the clothes, and the people inspired me.”

Errol Theunissen is a self-taught painter and illustrator born in Zimbabwe and is now based in Middlesbrough, UK. His work often incorporates scenes from his immediate environment and personal memories, blending vibrant colours with symbolic elements to create compelling visual narratives.
